We found out this week that in Dallas there are 2 Chinese Speaking Elders. Super cool!
So here’s the last email I’ll be sending, crazy and exciting. I’m excited for the plane ride to Minneapolis and then SALT LAKE!!
All I’m sending this week is some Scriptures. Here we go
D&C 58: 2-5
2 For verily I say unto you, blessed is he that keepeth my commandments, whether in life or in death ; and he that is faithful in tribulation , the reward of the same is greater in the kingdom of heaven.
3 Ye cannot behold with your natural eyes , for the present time, the design of your God concerning those things which shall come hereafter, and the glory which shall follow after much tribulation.
4 For after much tribulation come the blessings . Wherefore the day cometh that ye shall be crowned with much glory ; the hour is not yet, but is nigh at hand.
5 Remember this, which I tell you before, that you may lay it to heart, and receive that which is to follow.
Alma 46: 8
8 Thus we see how quick the children of men do forget the Lord their God, yea, how quick to do iniquity , and to be led away by the evil one.
D&C 88: 119
119 Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house , even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;
4 Nephi 4:2
2 And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth year, the people were all converted unto the Lord, upon all the face of the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another.
3 Nephi 19: 26
26 And Jesus said unto them: Pray on; nevertheless they did not cease to pray.
Here’s the Best One!!
1 Dear and well-beloved brother, Brother Wimmer , verily thus saith the Lord unto you: My servant Jacob, it is no more required at your hand to leave your family as in times past, for your offering is acceptable to me. Yea, Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you die; and it shall be well with you. 2 Nephi 28:7
I know that God lives and that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. I know The Book of Mormon was translated by Joseph Smith a prophet of God. I know Thomas S. Monson is a living prophet of God.
I love y’all out there
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen
Wow, what a week! I’m trying my best to sprint to the end. Somehow it’s getting harder right at the end. God just wants to see how much effort I’m willing to put into the work. I feel like we are working our butts off but the results just aren’t coming how we want them to. This is the last week and I know we can get results. Miracles are coming, I can feel it. I want to set Elder Freeland and Elder Yeung heading strong with a great investigator pool. We’ll have a new elder coming in right after I leave as well. I wish I could be here for his training. And for the other 2 elders that are coming in October but I just don’t get the great opportunity to train Americans who don’t speak a lick of Chinese. I guess I did get Elder Freeland. I just wish now I could train the 3 new elders that are coming in. It would be so much fun taking them to Chinatown and the Medical Center and walking around and teaching people and visiting people and them not being able to do anything. I never really got that opportunity on the mission. Very different than Elder Freeland will have. I wish I still had a year but it has to end eventually.
Right now our investigators are just slowly chugging around. We did find a new investigator this week but he leaves to Boston right after I leave. Hopefully he contacts missionaries in Boston or they can find him. He’s pretty set I think. He told us he really wants to feel the feelings that the spirit speaks to us through. He’s also related to some members in the Branch.
I’m kinda worried for Elder Freeland. He’ll be training 3 new missionaries coming in super soon. I’m now up for that challenge but 1 year ago I wouldn’t be ha. Elder Yeung is crazy hilarious.
We’ve really been working with *** lately. I’m always praying for this guy. We go out with him almost everyday and teach with him. He’s super cool. Just can’t get him to church all the time.
I had a great opportunity this week to attend the temple with all the other missionaries going home. Talked about marriage and dating and stuff like that haha. Really weird!! BUT the temple was super cool. Learned a lot for sure!!
I’ll be going to the temple every week after the mission!!
Some cool stuff I read this week
“We can give our children education, lessons, athletics, the arts, and material possessions, but if we do not give them faith in Christ, we have given them nothing.”
Elder Kevin w. Pearson.
Throwdown on all the Chinese people I talk to!!
D&C 75: 27
27 “Let them ask and they shall receive, knock and it shall be opened unto them, and be made known from on high, even by the Comforter, whither they shall go.
The Holy Ghost really does help us know where to go.”
We don’t convince people to join the church, we love them into the church. Can we convince members to be active member missionaries? I don’t think so, we’ve got to love them into the work!! So real!
Well that’s all I got this week. I probably forgot some things haha.
Wow this week flew by super fast! I swear it was yesterday I was telling people that I still had three weeks left in the mission. We sure are sprinting hard and trying our hardest to see miracles happen. This week still was kinda rough.
So on Tuesday my eye starting hurting a lot and it was all red so I got some medicine. Wednesday my eye was worse and I was kinda getting worried about what happened to my eye so I went to a clinic to see what the problem was. They told me I had 3 scratches on my cornea, pretty bad I would say. On Thursday I woke up and it was even worse so I went to the Eye doctor and they told me I had a corneal Ulcer, basically a hole in my eye. I then had to get some medicine at the pharmacy which helped a bunch. Now I’m feeling much better. I just need to see the Doctor right before I go home!
For a few days though I really couldn’t see anything in my eye and I looked pretty weird. Plus I couldn’t sleep at night but now I’m recovered and back to old Elder Wimmer.
So we spent quite some time at the doctors this week which was lame but we still were out working. For some reason this week, no one was interested in what we wanted to say. We had a few great lessons with our investigators and 3 people that came to church but we need more. We’re definitely working as hard as we can right now to find people.
Right now I’m praying real hard for Brother *** and his wife to be ready to get baptized before I leave. We just need to help Sister *** (the wife) to get ready. Brother *** is basically a member right now. He was present when we taught our investigators the plan of salvation and he put in some good words of input.
We’ve been working with *** a lot this week. Gotta keep in touch with *** all the time. I just call him sometimes to say hi and see how’s he doing. I now see what impact a true friend can have on someone else. I bet we all have someone we know that just needs a hello every once in awhile and a visit or two. I’ve learned that this really does have a huge impact on people.
Quote from Elder Hales.
“The Lord expects us to help solve our own problems. We are thinking reasoning human beings. We have the ability to identify our needs, to plan, to set goals, and to solve problems.”
Some scriptures I came across this week.
Mark 9: 23
23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth .
2 Nephi 2: 16
16 Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other.
D&C 75: 3
3 Behold, I say unto you that it is my will that you should go forth and not tarry, neither be idle but labor with your might—
We will not accidentally keep the commandments, it takes work. We need to act and not be acted upon, we don’t want to be objects
That’s pretty much what happened this week. Gotta go!
Pray for miracles!!
This came to me today. The whole mission I’ve been looking for a “silver bullet”. The thing that I can tell everyone and instantly they are interested. I keep learning that, everyone is different! I wish we could look in the PMG and it would tell us what to say and do, which it does for some things, but this is how the mission is helping me learn things. The PMG could have more things inside, more scriptures more references, more everything, but that’s not the point. It’s super stressful but fun to go to the scriptures and find scriptures that will help others find their answers to their questions. The Lord wants us to learn and grow through experience. I’ve learned that The gospel of Jesus Christ is always the answer to everyone’s questions. We just need to figure out how do we help others find their answer in The Gospel of Jesus Christ.
This week we also went and and worked and worked and worked. We hit the streets and talked with everyone we ran into. Results… Miracles. We got 3 referrals from Salt Lake and one of them is super cool. Some of them live super far away and it’s hard to contact them but one has a lot of potential. We taught him the restoration and it was a good lesson, he has a lot of questions. His name is Brother ***. He’s super busy with his work but I know him reading the book of mormon will help him!!
So we went on splits almost everyday this week and I normally go out with *** and talk with him about all his problems and then we teach people. He’s super funny and it’s always easier to talk with people on the street with him there. So *** and I ran into a couple, the husband is Buddhist and the wife is Catholic. We invited them to come to church and we both had a feeling that we got them. Sure enough, they gave us a call on Sunday morning and then came to church. This doesn’t happen very often!!
We also had one of our English class students come to church. She’s pretty interested in our church and is already friends with two of our members who attend English class.
Brother *** and his wife are also doing alright. I talked to brother *** about baptism and his wife will only be here for 2 weeks after I leave so I told him that they seriously need to prepare to get baptized. Brother *** is on board I think but his wife is still a work in progress. Pray for miracles!!!
Some spiritual stuff.
There is no spiritual experience in living by convenience – Elder Holland
Life is no spiritual picnic – Elder Andersen
If we don’t teach tithing simply enough and thoroughly enough we are baptizing less-actives who can’t go to the temple.
The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.
Everything denotes that there is a God! Do you know where this is in the Book of Mormon
I’ll just tell you haha, it’s in Alma 30:44
3 And I, Nephi, did go into the mount oft, and I did pray oft unto the Lord; wherefore the Lord showed unto me great things.
We share this scripture with a ton of people! Super good. What is the mount everyone???
Alma 31:38 And the Lord provided for them that they should hunger not, neither should they thirst; yea, and he also gave them strength, that they should suffer no manner of afflictions, save it were swallowed up in the joy of Christ. Now this was according to the prayer of Alma; and this because he prayed in faith.
Lets pray in faith everyone!!!
We can always learn things if we dive into the scriptures each and everyday. Just Do It. You’ll see blessing, I promise!!
This week we were under the sun a lot. We go to all the parks that we’ve found that have a lot of Chinese people. They come to life at 7:00. Before that there are literally none outside, it’s crazy. We found a few new investigators this week. None from our walking around though ha.
Brother *** is back from Florida so we can start teaching him and his wife. Sister *** is back. we saw her on Saturday and talked with her daughter as well.
Everywhere we went there was at least 10 times as many people outside. Pokemon Go!! Everyone is walking outside taking pictures or whatever they do. I don’t know how they play but it’s a crazy game. I would probably play it if I was home.
The Eagle has landed!!! Elder Yeung is here now and he’s a pretty cool Elder. He’s super funny. He falls asleep all the time and he’s pretty quiet but he’s fun. His Chinese and English are alright.
We had these 2 new English class students who drive more than an hour to get to our class. We shared the gospel with them and now they are sort of interested. They’ll only be here for a month or two so we’ll see what happens. They are super nice!
The English Elders baptized a Chinese couple and now the couple comes to our branch. They stole our baptism! But it’s good cause they understand English and now they know we have a Chinese branch!
I went to a meal appointment at an English Members home and sang “How Great Thou Art” for them. I really like that song now. I forgot how great it sounded.
I found out that on the 14th of August I have to sing 2 musical numbers and give a talk. Gotta use me up before I go back home haha.
I can’t think of anything else that happened this week. We need to go out to eat with a member soon. Love ya’ll out there.
Keep reading those scriptures!!
It’s true!! The Hong Kong Elder is coming in strong!! He’ll be coming in tomorrow so we’ll see what happens. Elder Freeland won’t be alone anymore!!
This week was pretty tough. Pretty much all our investigators are out of town/ in China, or we just can’t find them and they are off the map. Then a few of them just dropped us but we have a few that are holding on. They are progressing slowly but surely. It’s kinda strange now not to have Elder Peterson but at the same time it feels the same.
This week Elder Freeland and I went a bunch of parks that normally have a bunch of people at them, hoping to run into Chinese people. We figured out something, Chinese people don’t go to the park!! We met a few but none were interested. Most of them were Vietnamese.
*** told us that he knew where the Chinese people go so we told him to lead the way. We pretty much worked with him everyday this week, gotta work with members! He took us to the “Galleria Park”, not existent. But we did go next to the Galleria and there was this water wall that had a ton of people when we drove by it so we parked and found our way there and… there were no Chinese people there, they’re hiding from us! We also got lost outside the Galleria and we couldn’t find where we parked. Haha
We went contacting in Chinatown and we talked to quite a few people but we just couldn’t run into any interested people. This week we’re going to get out there and find a ton if new investigators. It’s gonna be great!
We got 3 referrals this week which is a crazy amount. We’re going to keep trying to contact them and turn them into investigators.
Miracle of the week!!
So we went to dinner with *** at the Hong Kong market. That was the first time that I’ve been there. There are pretty much only Vietnamese people that go there. Anyways, we were looking for some place to eat and then we ran into Sister ***!! She was baptized before I got here and she hasn’t come to church while I have been here. She also doesn’t open her door. She was super nice and surprised that I was still here. We met her brother and found out that she still has work on Saturday and Sunday so she can’t come to church. The rest of the week she doesn’t work!! It’s so annoying but what can we do?! She told me that she still reads the scriptures sometimes and prays which is actually some progress since the last time I saw her.
We had a great opportunity on Saturday to do some more service for Operation Blessings. We finished this house and completely restored the inside of their house and made the outside look nice. It was pretty cool, the owners have been gone since the flood so it was a nice surprise when they came back home and we revealed the house to them. We had 60 missionaries there to welcome them home, plus some other volunteers. It was pretty cool.
Update on ***. We got him to come to church but just because he promised us he’d come. We need him to promise to the Lord that he’ll come. He is super busy with work and came to church right from work.
We have this new english class student named ***. She and her husband just got here from China and then came to our class. They were coming to our church yesterday but then last minute cancelled on us. We’ll get them this week!
Some things I learned/liked from this week and some things that I heard.
Teaching children is like throwing spaghetti at a wall. If you throw enough, some of it will stick. Most of it will be left on the ground. SO true!
Sacred covenants are not negotiations. They are always bargains weighted in our favor.
I admonish you to plan your life with purpose – Thomas S. Monson
Don’t let the mission be the highlight of your life, want more.
Keep becoming something!
From “Tenacity” By David F. Evans
Here’s his invitation at the end
Make righteous goals. Always pray and seek the Lord’s guidance. Be worthy and avoid those things that will distract or hinder your progress. Have and use your personal temple recommend. Keep your covenants, especially when life is hard. Seek the blessings of eternal marriage and family. Then hold on. Don’t give up. Don’t quit. Keep walking and keep trying. There is happiness and help ahead. “Trust God and believe in good things to come.” Be tenacious in every righteous thing. You will see your faith strengthened and you will see your strengths and talents that God has given you deepened and magnified as your faith increases. In all of this, remember, “Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven; but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come. ” Of this I testify, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
I invite everyone out there to read this talk. It’s also in the Ensign for last month I think.
“So much in life depends on our attitude. . . . We can’t direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.
For maximum happiness, peace, and contentment, may we choose a positive attitude.” – President Thomas S. Monson
